WIND TOWERS

Wind towers are a fantastic passive strategy for bioclimatic regulation of environments, and we had the opportunity to implement them in a really interesting project.

The project we applied them to was a supermarket with enormous overheating problems. The situation was complicated: it was not possible to modify the existing systems to increase air conditioning. Additionally, with electricity prices skyrocketing, it was necessary to find a less mechanized and more sustainable solution.

This is where wind towers come into play. These structures are perfect for eliminating the heat accumulated during the night, allowing the cooling system to work on less hot air in the morning. Using the principles of thermal draft, we managed to design an efficient and innovative system.

We dedicated part of the display window to a grid that opens and closes automatically, activating the thermal draft when necessary. On the roof, we installed two towers with adjustable louvers and an insect-proof net to protect the exposed food. Additionally, the “roof” of the towers is equipped with a “burst” system that opens in case of fire, allowing smoke evacuation.

The result? A temperature reduction of almost 9 degrees Celsius, without the use of additional air conditioning systems. A real success for this supermarket and a big step forward towards more sustainable and innovative solutions.
